Mary Gale of Bentonville, Arkansas, says her 20-year-old cat, Sterling, "still chases younger cats and stalks our Jack Russell [Terrier] like he's a secret agent with the CIA." Sterling has company. The number of active, mature cats has doubled in the past 10 years.

"Cats are definitely living longer," says Fran Shaw, president of the Cat Writers' Association, Inc., and nationally known author of articles on cat health and behavior. "It's an extension of owners recognizing that what we can do for people we can do for cats," Shaw says. "We can give them better nutrition, just like we provide for our children."

Proves Age-Old Theory
Whether you have a kitten, adult or senior, the best way to ensure her good health is through proper exercise, nutrition, veterinary care and the use of new technology, if needed:
  • Nutrition. Choose a high-quality, nutritionally balanced food such as Premium IAMS® Cat foods—available for every life stage. For example, IAMS® Kitten Food for the first 12 months, IAMS® Original Formula Cat Food for adults and IAMS® Active Maturity™ for cats age 7 and older.
  • Exercise. Play with your cat, starting when she's a kitten, with feather wands, catnip-stuffed toys or balls. This can build muscle tone and increase blood circulation. These play sessions are especially important to help her stay trim through the middle and later years.
  • Regular Veterinary Care. should include a yearly examination. When your cat is 7 or older, biannual exams are recommended. Detecting disease and treating it early is the key to good health for cats in all life stages.
  • Dental Care. Keeping your cat's teeth healthy is important to maintaining her overall well-being. IAMS® Daily Dental Care™–now in all Adult Dry IAMS Cat Foods—helps slow tartar buildup by as much as 40 percent while your cat chews.
  • New Technology. The IAMS Pet Imaging Center in Vienna, Virginia, is a first-of-its-kind, state-of-the-art facility. It brings today's best MRI technology to the area's pets: Cats, dogs and even the occasional pet snake or iguana.
A new program through IAMS and Veterinary Pet Insurance(VPI) offers cat owners coverage for their pet's medical care. Policies cover more than 6,400 conditions related to accidental injuries, poisonings and illnesses (including cancer). Coverage helps pay for diagnostic tests, prescriptions, hospital stays, surgeries and more. In the U.S., for details or to sign up, visit this IAMS site.
